:pointr:Azzeh Refugee Camp, West Bank, Occupied Palestine

The Israeli occupation of Palestine has ravaged the landscape. Earth, edifice, and person are marked with scars; symbols of conflict past and conflict to come. After Palestinian resistance fighters were routed from the 13 story building in which this photo was taken, Israeli forces occupied the building for the remainder of the second intifada using holes like the one picture as sniper perches. This hole looks over the main street in Beit Lehem between Aida refugee camp and Deheisheh refugee camp, both sites of vigorous Palestinian resistance during the second intifada. The buildings pictured through the hole are part of a small refugee camp in central Beit Lehem called Azzeh camp. As I walked through this building, floor after floor devastated by the ravages of modern tools of warfare, I was struck by the permanence of the scars of violence. In some rooms more of the wall space was covered with bullet holes that not. In other rooms I saw on the floor what looked like the faint remnants of blood stains. Littering the floor were bullet and shrapnel fragments and everywhere there was cold sense that people had died and had killed in the rooms of this building.
