Artist's Comments Gaza  From the Ashes of our Misery: A series on hope in the midst of occupation.Umm al-Naser, Occupied Gaza, Summer 2007. The political and economic strangulation and military bombardment of Gaza all coalesced in late march of this year in a Northern Gazan neighborhood called Umm al-Naser. The town was flooded with their own sewage waste when a massive sewage treatment facility ruptured. "The facility, built in the 1970s to serve a population of 50,000, was serving 190,000 people by 2004, according to the UN." (BBC) There was actually already a plan to build a new facility in place when the flooding occured but as a result of lack of funds because of the sanctions leveled on the democratically elected Hamas party and the constant strife of occupation and subsequent domestic, sectarian conflict the sewage facility swelled with pressure and burst. Two toddlers and a 70 year old woman drowned in the sewage. This tragic event is symbolically characteristic of the Palestinian condition...especially this summer...the oppression and economic sanctions have forced the Palestinian people to wallow in their own shit. Civil society in both Gaza and the West Bank is badly dysfunctional and the scars of almost sixty years of occupation has and sterile ethnic cleansing has sowed the seed of violence between Palestinians.
